What is Acne?

Acne is a condition of the skin where lesions occur, caused by pores that are blocked by dead skin cells, oil and bacteria, and can even be caused by certain medications.  Acne occurs most often on the face, throat, shoulders, chest and back.  All age groups are affected, although acne is most often associated with the teenage years.  Different types of acne include comedones, papules,

pustules, nodules and cysts.  Treatments range from topical ointments to oral antibiotics and ultraviolet therapy to chemical peels.  Sufferers of acne are always encouraged not to pick or squeeze lesions because the normal flora of the skin such as staphylococci and streptococci can infect the site.
